Employer agrees she disciplined, fired staff after union vote

Second Cup franchise owner Kathy Attis disciplined and fired three employees following a union vote, the Labour Board heard this week.

Current and former employees painted a picture of a boss who intimidated, punished and fired staff after the vote on June 5.

Following the vote, Attis cut employees’ hours dramatically, they said.

Mysterious cracks are appearing in some of the oldest buildings and biggest tourist draws in Halifax. Now the building owners are questioning whether blasting at the future site of the Nova Centre has anything to do with the damage.

About 40 people held signs outside the Quinpool Road Second Cup on Saturday. People of all ages attended the rally but the crowd was composed mostly of 20-somethings.

Jason Edwards, 27-year-old representative of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), called out through a megaphone and the crowd responded:

“What do we want?”

“Jobs back!”

Baristas at the Second Cup on Quinpool Road are speaking out after a slew of alleged firings following a union vote last month.

Kathy Attis, owner of the Second Cup franchise location, allegedly fired three baristas after they voted to unionize on June 5, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) said Tuesday.

After months of negotiations, Just Us! has reached a deal with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) to unionize its Spring Garden Road café.

HRM says Metro Transit drivers learn to share the road

At around 5:10 yesterday evening, Adrian Martynkiw was biking home from work with a friend. As they passed the Mumford Terminal heading southeast, the number 14 bus approached them from behind.

Martynkiw passed his friend, and the bus driver honked loudly at them, he said.

The bus driver sped up and passed the cyclists too close for comfort, Martynkiw said.
