Halifax — In the age of the C-sections and scheduled birthing, many women still want to give birth "the old-fashioned way" (that is, at home with a midwife). Presently in Nova Scotia this is no easy feat.

Midwifery was regulated in 2009 and went from a private, for-profit, service to one offered free under provincial health care.

There are only a few North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis) left on the planet and their struggle to survive is being watched closely by Dr. Tim Frasier from St. Mary's University. The obstacles that small groups of animals encounter on the road to recovery are not well known.

                    New Group of Microbes Discovered

The tree of life just grew a new branch. It belongs to a group of microscopic algae that were recently discovered by researchers at Dalhousie University. This discovery goes to show just how little we know about the microbial world that underlies all biological systems.

"Off the Hook" is Atlantic Canada's first Community Supported Fishery (CSF). Fishermen are able to get a good price for their product and consumers in Halifax are able to get fresh fish directly from the source.

Listen to this report to find out how this model is changing the future of fishing.

Approximately 400 people attended Rally for our Forests in front of the provincial legislature on Friday, many traveling from outside HRM to be there for the 10am start. Jamie Simpson, the forest program coordinator with the Ecology Action Centre, planned the rally to “join in a public show of support for the future of Nova Scotia's forests and the communities that depend on them.”
