&lt;p&gt;The first annual Nova Scotia Soil Conference, held this past March 13th, shone the spotlight of the world on Halifax&amp;#39;s waste management practices. Attended by upwards of two hundred, the conference included impassioned speeches by scientists, representatives from industry, and concerned citizens&amp;#39; groups.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Learning that kiln-baked sewage sludge, also known as &amp;#39;biosolids&amp;#39;, is being marketed and sold across Nova Scotia as fertilizer, came as a shock to Lil MacPherson. MacPherson owns &amp;#39;The Wooden Monkey&amp;#39;, a Halifax restaurant that emphasizes local, seasonal, and organic ingredients.&lt;/p&gt;
